The Issue

I am one of an estimated 2 million grandparents in the UK being denied a relationship with their grandchildren.  Currently the Children Act 1989, a law that seeks to protect children and keep them safe fails to reference the important relationship between Grandparents and Grandchildren.  This act worked against me in court and actively prevented the my relationship with my grandson from birth continuing.

I am a grandparent who has been tragically alienated from my only grandson following the death of my only son. The void created by this absence is profound, not only for me but also for my grandson, who deserves to have a rich and fulfilling relationship with all members of his family, regardless of the unfortunate circumstances.

Grandparents play a crucial role in the lives of their grandchildren. They are often the keepers of family traditions, the storytellers, and can provide immense emotional and moral support. Yet, current legal frameworks do not grant grandparents the same rights as parents to maintain contact with their grandchildren. This oversight can lead to further emotional trauma, not just for grandparents but for the children who lose vital family connections.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, nurturing cross-generational bonds can significantly enhance a child's emotional well-being, providing stability and continuity in times of familial upheaval. Furthermore, studies have shown that children who maintain warm relationships with their grandparents tend to have fewer emotional and behavioral problems.

The law needs to recognize the invaluable contributions of grandparents in a child's life and provide them with the legal means to ensure their presence is maintained. Empowering grandparents with parental visitation rights will safeguard the emotional and developmental welfare of the children, ensuring that they do not lose the embrace of their loving grandparents due to legal technicalities.

I urge lawmakers to amend current family law statutes to reflect the vital role that grandparents play. By granting equal visitation rights, we can protect the interests of children, ensuring they have access to the full spectrum of familial love and support.

Please join me in this petition to advocate for a change that could positively impact millions of families. Sign the petition to allow grandparents the equal legal rights to see their grandchildren, bringing hope and healing to families like ours everywhere.
