Grant equal protection rights to cats as other domestic animals
The Issue
I am heartbroken to share that two of my beloved cats, my fur babies, have tragically lost their lives after being hit by cars. This devastating loss has made it clear that our laws are failing to protect cats, despite the fact that many of us consider them to be an integral part of our families.
Unlike dogs, horses, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, donkeys, and mules, cats do not benefit from the same level of legal protection and recognition. This lack of protection often results in neglected safety measures and inadequate accountability for harm caused to them.
This petition calls for legislative reform to extend these protections to cats across all regions. By acknowledging cats as deserving of equal protection under the law, we can ensure that future tragedies like the ones my family endured can be prevented.
Cats frequently face hazards posed by traffic, unfair treatment by individuals, and often suffer in silence due to a lack of legal advocacy. We propose that local councils adopt policies that require motorists to report all accidents involving cats, just as is necessary for other domestic animals. Furthermore, setting up educational programs in communities to raise awareness about the safety of cats around roads and neighborhoods is crucial.
We need to urge our lawmakers to recognize that cats hold a special place in our hearts and households. They deserve the same respect and concern afforded to other animals we hold dear.
Please sign this petition to help bring about a change in the legal framework, ensuring cats receive the protection they truly deserve. Join me in advocating for safer environments for our feline friends.
My two stories are heartbreaking just like many of yours.
My girl bell she was on a walk with me and my dog (Enzo) one night, a cat that was speeding collided with her nearly hitting me and my dog. As I laid crying on the floor as I just watched my fur baby be brutally hit by this car. Me and Enzo laid with bell, so many people drove past us one car stopped and took us all to the vets. It was too late the impact this driver caused her killed her near enough on the impact. I was told I could have pressed charges if they hit Enzo but not bell.
My second story and the reason for me to make this petition my boy mooncake, he was missing for 27 hours and I had checked everywhere for him. The 27th hour my partner found him in a bush hiding away, I was worried because he was close by and had not been responding but he was kicking so I didn't worry this was until I got him inside. We notice he was confused and very weak on his back legs he took himself off to the corner. I thought he fell off a wall but heartbreakingly I was mistaken, he was in so much pain I couldn't check him properly. The next day we're in the vets this is when I discovered the truth, my baby hadn't just been hit by a car he's been dragged his whole tail was dislocated and he had lost the ability to go to the bathroom. He was to sick to survive the amputation and even if we could have done that he had less than 10% chance of being able to live a happy life, so I chose the best option for him.
I'm not the only person to have a story like this so please if you want to share your story let me know. More stories more voices and rights for our cats finally
