My dog Treasa is not simply a companion animal but an Emotional Support Animal. She is an integral part of my everyday life and helps me navigate the struggles of daily living. However, we face an ongoing injustice: my dog Treasa, like many other Emotional Support Dogs, is not always welcome in public spaces.
Emotional Support Animals (ESAs), unlike service animals, do not have access rights to public spaces. Even though they provide a valuable service to thousands of citizens, they are often dismissed, banned, or denied access. This lack of understanding and empathy can lead many ESA owners to feel isolated and discriminated against, hindering their emotional well-being.
I request a system for ESAs to be certified and recognised with a special badge. This badge will visually signal to businesses and public transport operators that an ESA is not merely a pet, but an essential aid for the individual. In the United States, a survey showed that 74% of pet owners reported mental health improvements from pet ownership (HABRI National Poll, 2017). With this in mind, it is reasonable to infer that ESAs can have even greater positive effects on mental health for those who require them.
This is an appeal to our government and local authorities - recognise and protect the rights of Emotional Support Animals. These animals play a critical role in the mental health and wellbeing of their owners. By granting access to public transport and buildings, we foster a society that celebrates inclusivity and understanding.
I ask you to stand with me, Treasa, and countless others who rely on their Emotional Support Animals. Your signature is one step forward in making this change happen. Please, sign this petition.
