GRANT EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES

The Issue

Many indigenous communities are located in remote or disadvantaged areas of the Philippines, this includes Igorot People, Mangyan, Ati People, Mamanwa, etc., making it difficult to access quality education. Furthermore, indigenous students may also face discrimination and stigmatization within the education system. This can include being treated unfairly or disrespectfully by teachers and fellow students, or being held to different standards due to their indigenous identity. This can create a hostile and unwelcoming environment for indigenous students, which can further discourage their participation and academic success.

For so many people, education is an escape route from poverty in the Philippines. In places like the Philippines, has clearly not been the case, as millions of Filipinos find the education route blocked and thus the lack of education causes poverty. In fact, about a quarter of the Filipino population is said to live below the poverty line as of today. Philippines is the 13th most populous country in the world. With English language as its official language even though hundreds of local dialects are spoken across the nation of more than 7500 islands.

The importance of educating youth in their own cultures, as well as using indigenous languages to educate them, was stressed today during the discussion on culture and education in the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Above all, indigenous education is needed to ensure the survival and transmission of knowledges and worldviews that uphold spirituality, abundance, balance, resilience, adaptability, sustainability, living within the carrying capacity, and making collective decisions for the benefit of all. The society will be much more better since indigenous people can finally find better work since they're provided good educational support.
