Grant Early Release for Rehabilitated Violent Offenders & Police Reform

Grant Early Release for Rehabilitated Violent Offenders & Police Reform
The Issue
OV4Justice is committed to advocating for comprehensive criminal justice reform, focusing on two key areas: police reform and the early release of incarcerated individuals who have demonstrated true rehabilitation. Our mission is rooted in the belief that the justice system should prioritize fairness, rehabilitation, and second chances rather than punishment alone. We want to be able to make changes with the criminal justice system in Louisiana, but rather nationwide.
Police reform is a crucial component of our mission. We stand for policies that promote accountability, transparency, and fairness in law enforcement. This includes advocating for body cameras, stronger oversight, de-escalation training, and community policing practices that foster positive relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. We believe in a justice system where law enforcement is held accountable for misconduct and where the safety and rights of every individual are respected.
Equally important is our fight for the early release of rehabilitated prisoners. Many individuals are serving long sentences for crimes committed decades ago. These individuals, like my loved one, have demonstrated significant behavioral changes and have worked tirelessly to rehabilitate themselves. Over their years of incarceration, they have participated in educational programs, vocational training, and personal development. We believe that these individuals should be given the opportunity for early release, as they have shown a commitment to becoming upstanding citizens. The data supports this, showing that those who engage in rehabilitation programs have a lower recidivism rate and are better equipped to reintegrate into society.
OV4Justice also supports restorative justice practices, which focus on repairing harm caused by crime, rather than solely punishing the offender. This approach prioritizes healing, reconciliation, and the chance for offenders to make amends through actions such as community service, restitution, and addressing the root causes of criminal behavior.
Through petitions, campaigns, and public awareness efforts, we aim to educate the public about the necessity of both police reform and the need for second chances for those who have demonstrated rehabilitation. We believe that change starts with knowledge, and we are committed to amplifying voices calling for transformation in the criminal justice system.
According to a report by the National Institute of Justice, long-term prisoners—like my husband—who have completed rehabilitation programs have a lower recidivism rate compared to others who have not (National Institute of Justice, 2018). This reinforces how rehabilitation can aid in an individual's successful reentry into society.
This petition calls upon the Governor to consider an early release program for violent offenders who have served significant portions of their sentences and shown true reform. Granting them this chance will not only act as a testament to the power of rehabilitation but also serve as a symbol of hope for others in similar circumstances. Let’s reshape the narrative from punishment to transformation.
Unfortunately, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has taken a tough-on-crime stance, opposing early release even for rehabilitated individuals. His administration has prioritized longer incarceration and policies that restrict parole, with limited support for second chances—even for those who have clearly changed.
Please sign this petition and support the cause of second chances and reform.
