Grant Approval for Allulose in Canada

Grant Approval for Allulose in Canada
The Issue
Losing a loved one to health complications is heartbreaking. When my late mother-in-law battled diabetes and cancer, I became painfully aware of the lack of truly healthy options on Canadian grocery shelves. Most products are filled with harmful ingredients like maltodextrin, which has a high glycemic index, spikes blood sugar levels, and offers no real nutritional value. Despite its harmful effects, maltodextrin is approved and widely used in Canada.
In contrast, Allulose is a natural, low-calorie sweetener found in foods like figs and raisins. It tastes nearly identical to sugar but contains just 1/10 of the calories and has no significant impact on blood sugar. Recognized as safe by the U.S. FDA, Allulose is already helping people in other countries manage their health. Yet in Canada, it remains unapproved.
Why does this matter? An estimated 5.7 million Canadians are pre-diabetic or diabetic, and Allulose could provide a safer, healthier alternative. With sugar consumption linked to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, Canadians deserve better options to make healthier choices.
It’s time for Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to take action. Why approve harmful ingredients like maltodextrin while delaying safer, science-backed alternatives like Allulose? Let’s follow the example of the United States and prioritize the health of Canadians.
