The Issue

My name is Anna Nickolette Hall (known as Nini to my grandson). I am the mother of Phillip Simmons-Smith, who was tragically taken from us due to gun violence. After his passing, my connection to my grandson was cut off through protective orders. To make matters worse, after Phillip passed, his insurance payout of half a million dollars was never shared with his family — not a single dollar was offered, even though we were struggling. At the very least, I want to remain present in my grandson’s life, to ensure Phillip’s son knows the love and strength of his family. No legal technicality should erase family love. Children deserve the support of their entire family, and grandparents play an important role in their growth, healing, and stability.
I am calling on my community, lawmakers, and all who value family to recognize grandparents’ rights. I ask for your support in pushing for awareness, compassion, and policy changes that protect the bond between grandparents and grandchildren. Please sign and share this petition to help me, and other grandparents like me, fight for the right to be in our grandchildren’s lives.   ⸻ 🔹 “When I went to court, the judge denied my grandparent rights—not because of my love for my grandson or my ability to care for him—but because of a protection order. This legal technicality has erased my bond with my grandson, and I believe no piece of paper should have the power to take away family love.”
