The Issue

The shopping area, the Grand Island Plaza, adjacent to the Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial has been a perennial eyesore on Grand Island Blvd and is increasingly dilapidated.

Furthermore, the owner has allowed the parking lot to develop many pot holes, fails to ensure snow and ice is cleared on a timely basis, is slow to address roof leaks, which could create mold issues, and has demonstrated a general disregard for the occupants of the businesses at the plaza and their customers. The latest concern occurred when a delivery truck backed into and destroyed the corner of the wooden canopy above the Dollar General and adjacent to M&T Bank.

Request

We, the undersigned, are urging the Town of Grand Island Supervisor, the Town Board, the Town Attorney, and the Town's Code Enforcement Office to recognize that this level of neglect threatens the public health, safety, and welfare of Grand Island residents and visitors. Accordingly, we request that every effort be made to correct this, enforce all town laws, codes, and ordinances, and issue violations and if needed, begin legal proceedings.
Additionally, we request a committee be created to work with the owner to find a suitable buyer for his property.

Finally, we would appreciate a public discussion on these requests at the April Town Board meeting.

Sincerely,

Concerned residents of Grand Island
