Answers for the Denied Fall 2020 GCU Nursing Applicants
The Issue
The GCU Spring 2020 semester was cut short by the out-break of COVID-19 in the midst of this all classes were moved to online modules in order to keep students safe. Those who were accepted for the Summer 2020 Nursing Program were given the option to start their courses online and finish the rest of the credits in the Fall or start their entire course load in the Fall and take the summer off.
When this information was relayed to all the Pre-Licensure Nursing and Nursing students via email from Dr. Lisa Smith the Dean of The College of Nursing, counselors were questioned regarding the students who were applying for the Nursing Program in the Fall 2020 school year and whether or not these applicants would be impacted because of the Summer students who chose to take the summer semester off and begin their courses in the Fall, however, the answer from the counselor was that "There will be no ramifications for fall applicants!" On top of that, there was an email sent out claiming that all applications for the Fall 2020 Nursing program would not be counted as an attempt out of the two attempts all students have to apply to the program.
This past week on June 15th 2020 all applicants for the Fall 2020 school year received emails from associate dean Trina J. Staton regarding their acceptance or denial from the program and the majority's applications were not accepted. There are a list of qualified students who have made the Dean's List at GCU and were denied acceptance. There was minimal explanation on the email except the average GPA and HESI scores of those were were initially accepted into the program. On top of the limited explanation for those who weren't accepted, we were told our Student Service Counselors would be contacting us soon to discuss our options for the upcoming school year and there has been little effort on GCU's part to do so.
Those of us who were not accepted into the program are emotional and confused as to what the real reason was. Most of us were just as qualified and would have been accepted into the program if it weren't for the outbreak of Corona Virus. Now the students who have been rejected are forced to minor in a subject pushing back graduation by a semester. We need answers and explanation. How many spots were actually open, how and why would Summer students be offered to take spots of the Fall applicants without notifying those applying for the fall, how were students chosen over others for acceptance in the Fall despite similar GPA's and HESI scores, will this be the same case for Spring 2021 with limited numbers of spots and rejection letters despite meeting requirements, and most importantly why was this application not counted as one of the two attempts if there was no reason for any of us to worry.
