They will also let us rationalise the three separate pedestrian crossing signals into one location better suited to where people want to cross. Chevalier Street has been designated by Ipswich Borough Council as an “air quality management area” suffering from high levels of vehicle emissions. The current road layout provides no way to influence queuing on Chevalier Street because of the way that roundabouts work. The new signals will work across the network to reduce air quality problems when they arise by managing queues. The need for more sophisticated traffic control arrangements in Ipswich arises because at peak times there is already more traffic on the road network than can be accommodated. This results in congestion and delay. Planned housing and employment growth in the town will lead to an even greater imbalance between supply and demand. Our new traffic control system will mean that the network as a whole works more efficiently.
