Stop killing innocent animals and start working with rescue groups!
The issue
In the last couple of months, two dogs (that we know of) were killed by The Lost Dogs' Home. There was no attempt at rehoming them. There were pathetic excuses for putting them down - a TREATABLE skin condition, being one of them. That was Scruffy. The other - Fonzie, 2 years old - had been lost and was taken to The Lost Dogs' Home. His owner - an elderly woman - had her granddaughter helping her to find him. She knew he was at The Lost Dogs' Home. They said he wasn't. On the Sunday, the granddaughter said she would be there to look for him the very next day - and she did exactly that. She went looking everywhere - had a photo with her to show people there what he looked like.
After waiting 3 hours for an answer as to what had happened to Fonzie, manager of the "shelter", Sue Conroy, finally came out to tell this young lady that Fonzie was dead. He had been killed a matter of hours earlier, even though they KNEW she was coming to find him.
Lies, flimsy excuses and death. That's what The Lost Dogs' Home trades in - and has done for years.
After Scruffy was killed, there was a massive uproar. The LDH said they had taken on board and that they would work to prevent something like this happening again. Yet, here we are.
For years, rescue groups have been trying to work with the LDH. But for reasons that can't honestly be understood...they refuse to do so. This, whilst their own Annual General Report states how many animals are euthanised per year. A year or so ago, that was 1662, at the North Melbourne "shelter". Imagine the number of animals that could have been saved, had the LDH stopped being so stubborn and started putting the welfare of the animals first.
We are not looking to shut The Lost Dogs' Home down. That would be a pointless exercise and would not help the very creatures we so want to. They DO do some good work. What we want is for them to do what they do much, MUCH better.
For example, photographs on their website and Facebook of stray dogs/cats. This is a very easy thing to achieve and has a massive reach in terms of audience. A simple action, but one that could lead to a huge amount of animals being returned home or rehomed.
So, to Graeme Smith and Sue Conroy - we ask that you stop the spin, stop the lies, stop the KILLING. You are entrusted with the care of so many creatures. You need to start working with those who are willing to help you - so many rescue groups, in Victoria alone - and start putting the lives of animals FIRST.
