Grad Cap Decoration in Warren Con
The Issue
Seniors at Warren Consolidated schools aren’t allowed to decorate their graduation caps. Cap decorating is something many underclassmen look forward to do for graduation, only to realize it’s not allowed. Cap decorating is similar to the tradition of painting a senior parking spot, taking something and making it theirs. Administration says that decorating caps leaves too much room for unpredictable outcomes. Some students may put profanity or offensive phrases on their caps, and if 3D objects are used they may fall off, or obstruct the vision of other students behind them. However there is a way around this, similar to senior parking spots, it could be something the students pay for, $5-$10, and caps could only be decorated afterschool with a teacher, or staff members observation. Not being allowed to decorate graduation caps, may also be due to the idea of tradition. Seeing students in their traditional cap and gown, all looking the same follows tradition, but leaves little room for individuality. Standing out as individual students is what should be promoted, not just following the standard. Students should be allowed to stand out, and if it’s possible to allow it with regulations, it should be. So while cap decorating isn’t allowed currently, I urge people to help sign this petition and help future classes get this opportunity.
