GPs must refer young adults for MRI scans/X-rays after 3–4 visits to the GP
The Issue
Neepy was dismissed by her GPs more than 10 times. She was told to take painkillers and even laughed at during consultations. No scans. No referrals. No urgency.
By the time I fought for a MRI, I first had to insist on a simple X-ray in A&E. When the doctor finally showed it to us, I was the one who pointed out the tumour shadow to the doctor . Only then was Neepy admitted-and the very next day she was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
She was just 26 years old. This cannot happen again.
I later discovered that an earlier X-ray already showed signs of a tumour- but the hospital never told us. This failure of care stole my daughter’s chance to live. A full investigation later confirmed negligence in her case. I won my case, but no parent should have to fight like this, especially when their child’s life is at stake.
Neepy could have been saved if her pain had been taken seriously earlier. Instead, she was ignored by her GPs and by our local hospital.
👉 Jess’s Rule has recently been announced, requiring GPs to review cases after three appointments if no diagnosis has been found. This is an important step - but for many young people like my daughter Neepy, a review alone would not have been enough.
We need accountability to make sure no family suffers like this again. Please sign to demand that GPs are required to refer young adults for scans & specialist review after 3–4 repeat visits if symptoms persist.
Why this matters :
My daughter, Dhneep kaur“Neepy” Bains, first went to her GP in 2017 with severe pain in her foot and leg. She was dismissed over and over again by her GPs with “sciatica “ without specialist referral.
Over the next year, she went back to her GP more than 10 times. Each time she was ignored. No referral, no proper tests, no urgency. This failure of care stole my daughter’s chance to live.
Neepy herself left a message in her diary:
✨ “If you feel weird, go to your doctor! No matter how small your problem, make sure you get your arse down there — and keep going if they send you packing.” ✨
Her words now feel like a legacy. But her life should never have been cut short.
What We Are Demanding (clear action):
We are calling on NHS England and UK health leaders to:
1. Introduce a rule that young adults must be referred for scans or specialist checks after 3–4 repeat GP visits with the same unresolved symptoms.
2. Ensure GPs take persistent pain seriously in young people and do not dismiss it as “too young for cancer.”
3. Improve transparency and accountability when early warning signs are missed in tests like X-rays.
Why Sign:
Because Neepy’s story is not unique — too many young people are ignored until it’s too late.
Because early detection saves lives.
Because no family should have to bury their child when it could have been prevented.
Together, we can turn Neepy’s pain into change. Please sign and share this petition so no other young life is lost to negligence.
What We’re Calling For is
1. Change in health policy: Require healthcare professionals to urgently refer young patients for scans or specialist checks by their third GP visit if symptoms persist. This must be a standard rule to stop dangerous delays in diagnosis.
2. Early Diagnosis Saves Lives : Early detection gives patients more treatment options, better outcomes, and access to trails both in UK and abroad.
3. Education for Professionals: Provide updated training and resources (leaflets, guidelines, ongoing education) for GPs and healthcare workers to recognise cancer symptoms in young adults.
4. Accountability and Protection: Doctors, nurses, and all healthcare professionals must prioritise young adults symptoms and protect them from preventable cancer deaths.
5. Political Action: We are calling on our local MP: Pam Cox , to support this petition so it can be heard in Parliament.
No Excuses: Covid-19 or system pressures must never be used as reasons to deny or delay referrals.
