Eric Lier started this petition to Governor Steve Sisolak and

We, the undersigned, demand the Olin Chlor Alkali chemical plant located in the heart of Henderson, Nevada, be closed and the site be cleared of any toxic chemicals that have contaminated the area.

This site has a long history of causing pollution and endangering the residents of Henderson. 30 years ago, a chemical leak sent a green haze over Henderson, Nevada. That same chemical factory at what is now the Olin Chlor Alkali chemical plant continues to pose a serious health hazard to the residents of Henderson. According to the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, Olin Chlor Alkali and its predecessor Pioneer are responsible for one largest toxic waste sites in Southern Nevada, contaminating ground water.

Politics have forced local officials to turn a blind eye for years. Olin Chlor Alkali and its parent corporation Olin Corporation as well as the United Steel Workers union hold tremendous sway at both a local and national level. The Olin Chlor Alkali chemical plant site is not located inside the Henderson city limits despite its location right in the heart of Henderson, making the local government impotent at regulating the site. The Clark County Commission has expressed no interest in closing down this dangerous toxic chemical plant because of the loss of a few union jobs at one of the oldest USW shops in the state. This chemical plant is old and dilapidated and was recently forced to reduce production. We do not want to wait until toxic chemicals again start spilling from the site.

Trains filled with highly toxic chemicals from this plant roll through Henderson every day, and the speed limit meant to keep these trains from causing a catastrophic calamity has recently been increased. Those trains don't just go through Henderson but a large portion of the Las Vegas Valley, including the Las Vegas Strip and Fremont Street areas.

For this reason, we demand that city, county, and state officials remove the dangerous Olin Chlor Alkali chemical plant from our neighborhood and begin a clean-up of the toxic chemicals contaminating that site and our neighborhood.
