Stop the violence against LGBTQ community in Puerto Rico NOW

The Issue

The most beautiful island in the world, the warmest and nicest people.  However, violence against the LGBTQ community in Puerto Rico is unacceptable.  The police do not apprehend those who commit violence against the LGBTQ community.  This must stop NOW.  The murder of four transgender women in the past few months, as well as the murder of eight LGBTQ people in the past 15 months, without one arrest is beyond incompetence.

I owned a condo in San Juan, I had a run-in with the police.  Me and my children were harassed.  The police asked where I got the children, I explained that my children were adopted.  They demanded my children's birth certificates and asked how I got to the island with the children.  The police did not understand that you just get on a plane to fly from the US to Puerto Rico!  Education of the police department is necessary.  After the incident, I did not feel safe in Puerto Rico, an island I have been to many, many times over the last decade.

The police need comprehensive training on LGBTQ issues.  There needs to be protective measures for the LGBTQ community.  The current system is simply unsustainable.  There needs to be a concentrated effort to educate the public in Puerto Rico concerning violence against the LGBTQ community.
