Delay in New Jersey Property Taxes With No Interest or Penalties

The Issue

As the sole owner of Randolph Tennis Center in New Jersey, I can say before COVID-19 my business was thriving and was a positive asset to the community. I was forced to close my doors on March 15, 2020 and have not been able to open since and I have no idea when I will be able to reopen.

My quarterly property tax bill is due on May 1, 2020 and I was told by the Township of Randolph that if I pay this late I will still be forced to pay interest and penalties. It is impossible to make such a payment on time when we are not allowed to open our doors to work. Interest and penalties on this bill are substantial. Without the ability to generate an income how can the local government expect anyone to come up with the resources to pay these tax bills? This is a serious threat to my business and all of my employees jobs as well if no leniency is given.

If our businesses are forced to shut down, so many employees will lose their jobs as well. It is in all of our best interests to make sure our doors are able to reopen after the shutdown is over.

In speaking with other business owners, so many of them are faced with the same challenges with closures and loss of jobs. We are all in jeopardy and can use any and all assistance for the duration of the COVID-19 outbreak.

We are asking the State of New Jersey to waive penalties and interest on our property tax payments. Attempting to pay these taxes when there is no income will undoubtedly cause even greater financial burden on already struggling businesses forced to close due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Waiving of penalties and interest of property taxes will provide immediate financial relief to businesses and homeowners. I feel we are all doing our part to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and in return we need some assistance in order to once again build our businesses back to what they were and not risk losing them altogether.
