Governor Lee and Mayor Young: Hold xAI Accountable and Protect City from Toxic Pollution

Governor Lee and Mayor Young: Hold xAI Accountable and Protect City from Toxic Pollution
The Issue
Elon Musk’s company, xAI, is building a massive supercomputer complex in Boxtown, Memphis — a historically Black neighborhood that has already endured generations of environmental harm.
Now, residents are facing a new threat.
According to NBC News, gas-powered turbines are already running 24/7 on the site — releasing toxins into the air that Memphis families breathe every day.
Department of Health has not approved the permits, and there’s been no transparent environmental review, no clear health protections, and no accountability for the community impacted most.
Memphis is once again being treated as expendable — a sacrifice zone for tech industry expansion.
We call on Governor Bill Lee and Memphis Mayor Paul Young to
1. immediately release a detailed public plan of action to address emissions from the xAI site.
2. Conduct a full environmental impact assessment with independent oversight
3. Hold xAI financially and legally responsible for pollution and health risks
4. Guarantee that Boxtown residents are involved in decision-making about their own neighborhood.
No community should have to live with 24/7 toxic emissions — especially not one that’s already borne the brunt of environmental injustice for decades.
