Standardized tests limit creativity in both teaching and learning as well as reduce students into a number. These tests move us towards a standard education system, assuming that there is one way to teach, one curriculum, and one pathway to success. Study after study shows that income has the highest correlation to a student’s performance on a standardized test. Next comes race. Beyond just the politics of race and class, test scores provide no comprehensive feedback to teachers. If we want teachers to improve, we as a community need to provide them with comprehensive feedback that's specific to the community they serve. Finally, these tests are expensive and are a waste of valuable class time in which student teacher relationships are fostered. In order to create a more holistic approach to education, we support an immediate elimination of standardized testing in the state of Oregon.
