Help the California food industry survive this crisis

The Issue

We, owners, workers, and supporters of the California food industry, are calling on Governor Newsom to greatly expand support for small businesses and workers struggling through the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis. We believe that the options being discussed presently by the government—low interest loans, a few extra weeks of sick pay—are altogether insufficient to stem the losses experienced by millions of Californians in the food industry.

We need the state’s help to maintain our thriving food community, a community that millions of low income workers depend on to feed and house their families. Support us, because California should care for its food industry workers as much as it cares for big banks. No bartender, server, or restaurant owner can survive months without income. This is a crisis for millions of us, and we need your help to get through it.

We, as a community, are doing our part to stem the tide of the pandemic, but at the same time, we need California’s support to come out the other side with the same flourishing industry that has served as the backbone of the state’s economy. We want more than bailouts for the airlines and Wall Street, we want support for the owners and workers who are the lifeblood of this state, many of whom work paycheck to paycheck to serve food every day to our communities. Weeks off work with little to no support just isn't a realistic option for many in our community. We need swift action to stop the financial destruction that is already upon us.

As an industry, we are coming together nationally to advocate for emergency assistance and are hopeful that Congress will create the Restaurant & Foodservice Industry Recovery Fund.  We are writing today to seek a variety of relief measures from the State that will aid our small businesses during this public health crisis.  

We respectfully request: 

-Increasing the unemployment benefit amount for furloughed employees, ensuring access to unemployment insurance regardless of immigration status or time on job, and consider extending all unemployment benefits beyond 26 weeks. 


-Freezing increases to unemployment insurance taxes for businesses who must layoff or furlough employees. 


-Waiving some payroll taxes for the first half of the year for hospitality, food and beverage businesses. 

-Access to immediate cash flow through grants, low to 0% interest loans or tax cuts, with additional funds available for employers willing to improve race and gender equity in the workplace.

-Calling for rent deferment and abatement for small businesses and supporting legislative changes necessary to make it happen.

-Calling on payment processors to waive fees for the first half year for hospitality, food and beverage businesses. 

-Calling on the insurance industry to honor business interruption insurance claims and work with businesses severely impacted during this crisis.  

As small independent restaurant operators and food & beverage manufacturers, we are already carrying a significant debt burden. In order to continue operating after this crisis, we need immediate assistance and action from the State of California, the federal government, lenders, and insurance providers. Deferment of obligations without additional remedies will only crush businesses with more mounting debt.

We look forward to working with you on the nuances of these requests and urge you to take swift action where possible.  Our industry and our state have overcome adversity before; armed with the right tools, we can do it again.

The Issue

We, owners, workers, and supporters of the California food industry, are calling on Governor Newsom to greatly expand support for small businesses and workers struggling through the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis. We believe that the options being discussed presently by the government—low interest loans, a few extra weeks of sick pay—are altogether insufficient to stem the losses experienced by millions of Californians in the food industry.

We need the state’s help to maintain our thriving food community, a community that millions of low income workers depend on to feed and house their families. Support us, because California should care for its food industry workers as much as it cares for big banks. No bartender, server, or restaurant owner can survive months without income. This is a crisis for millions of us, and we need your help to get through it.

We, as a community, are doing our part to stem the tide of the pandemic, but at the same time, we need California’s support to come out the other side with the same flourishing industry that has served as the backbone of the state’s economy. We want more than bailouts for the airlines and Wall Street, we want support for the owners and workers who are the lifeblood of this state, many of whom work paycheck to paycheck to serve food every day to our communities. Weeks off work with little to no support just isn't a realistic option for many in our community. We need swift action to stop the financial destruction that is already upon us.

As an industry, we are coming together nationally to advocate for emergency assistance and are hopeful that Congress will create the Restaurant & Foodservice Industry Recovery Fund.  We are writing today to seek a variety of relief measures from the State that will aid our small businesses during this public health crisis.  

We respectfully request: 

-Increasing the unemployment benefit amount for furloughed employees, ensuring access to unemployment insurance regardless of immigration status or time on job, and consider extending all unemployment benefits beyond 26 weeks. 


-Freezing increases to unemployment insurance taxes for businesses who must layoff or furlough employees. 


-Waiving some payroll taxes for the first half of the year for hospitality, food and beverage businesses. 

-Access to immediate cash flow through grants, low to 0% interest loans or tax cuts, with additional funds available for employers willing to improve race and gender equity in the workplace.

-Calling for rent deferment and abatement for small businesses and supporting legislative changes necessary to make it happen.

-Calling on payment processors to waive fees for the first half year for hospitality, food and beverage businesses. 

-Calling on the insurance industry to honor business interruption insurance claims and work with businesses severely impacted during this crisis.  

As small independent restaurant operators and food & beverage manufacturers, we are already carrying a significant debt burden. In order to continue operating after this crisis, we need immediate assistance and action from the State of California, the federal government, lenders, and insurance providers. Deferment of obligations without additional remedies will only crush businesses with more mounting debt.

We look forward to working with you on the nuances of these requests and urge you to take swift action where possible.  Our industry and our state have overcome adversity before; armed with the right tools, we can do it again.
