Release of Luke Johnson' Watson - Remove 15 year Enhancements

The Issue

Dear Governor Newsom,

Our son Luke William Watson ‘Johnson is a nonviolent offender housed in a level 4 prison system with an extremely long sentence 17-22 years this and if you saw his charges you would see the sentence does not fit his crime. Luke was very young when he was arrested and sentenced. Luke is entering his 9th year in the prison system.

The NO enhancement law passed almost three years ago and he continues to sit in a level 4 prison. Like so many he became addicted to opiates after a sports injury and fell into the mess of opiate addiction. Prior to that he was an excellent student, an athlete that was scouted in his freshman year of baseball. He is a loved by his family and friends, he is a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew, uncle and friend.

At his sentencing he was given enhancements that added 15 years extra to his sentence. Keep in mind Luke has never assaulted anyone, harmed anyone or used a weapon. Presently he has served his base sentence, what is left to serve are 15 years of enhancements which have been deemed illegal. Luke is using his time in a positive manner working on improving himself, his sobriety, treatment for mental health, education, SUD  and through it all maintained a good attitude. His strong faith during this time is to be admired, he is a man of God, he always has been but he is walking the walk now and he is remorseful for his acts of the past and he wants to be able to encourage others to not make the mistakes he did and get treatment for their addictions. In addition he is currently working two jobs and has a received positive feedback from supervising officers and other individuals overseeing his work.

Luke is actively pursuing his college degree and maintains a 3.5 GPA. He has completed all the mandated groups and enrolled / completed numerous groups and classes on his own. God is his focus and sharing his faith he currently leads music worship with his guitar for the other men in blue who are attending services.

We urge you to use your power to help us shorten his sentence and bring him home to his family. Luke is medically fragile, not a threat to society, remorseful of his choices and we are asking that you see the positive changes he has made and grant him early release. When Luke is released has a safe place to live and the support of family & friends and means to find employment.

We know how seriously you take your duty to protect our communities and Luke is not a threat to anyone. He is a kind and thoughtful individual.

We urge you to grant his release as soon as possible.

Those of you reading this petition we ask you to sign in support of Lukes Early release, and if you can contact Governor Newsom on his behalf and please hold him in your prayers. Thank you in advance for signing.
