Governor Abbott: Reject the Mandatory Ten Commandments Bill in Public Schools

The Issue

The Texas legislature is advancing a bill that would require every public school classroom in the state to display the Ten Commandments — a move that threatens the separation of church and state, student inclusivity, and local control.

Religious expression should be protected — not mandated.

While students and schools should be free to recognize the role of religion in history or their own lives, forcing a specific religious text into every classroom is unconstitutional, unnecessary, and exclusionary to students and teachers of different faiths or no faith at all.

We call on Governor Greg Abbott to veto the Ten Commandments bill currently moving through the legislature
Ensure that religious texts in schools remain optional, not mandatory
Protect the rights of Texas families to make those decisions at the local or individual level — not through state law.

Let schools reflect the diversity of their communities, not one-size-fits-all mandates from Austin.
