#NoMoreTrashBags - Champion the Dignity, Love and Respect for Foster Children

There are over 425,000 children in the foster care system across the United States. In Texas, we have over 18,000 children in care.  These brave young people ages 0-17 are packed up with their whole world in a trash bag multiple times to go and live with people who are complete strangers. I know this first hand... not because I was one of the children being removed, but I saw my foster/adopted siblings coming into my home, 3 separate times.

A small gesture of a duffel bag or a backpack would ease the transition into a brand new home for every foster kid in the system. It would be a symbol that their lives have value and that these are temporary set backs on their journey to find a forever family. The stories I have heard, it is obvious that transitioning into a new home is a frightening time. The kindness of strangers and treating children with respect would have made a world of difference in their young, shattered lives.

We need to do better and budget for each removal, one NEW and DURABLE backpack or duffel bag.   The bags need to be of the best quality and not a hand me down or cheap upgrade from a trash bag.  No need to fill the bag either... let them fill with their own treasures or tailor to their own needs.  Plus, this approach keeps the price down with just a bag for now.  The budget will be based on the (number of child removals in each county X $10 maximum).

I invite you to be part of this change and please sign and share this petition to help eliminate trash bags forever in the foster care system. By adding this important line item to each county budget, we are encouraging Texas to lead the nation in making this positive change an actual practice and policy.   I will be presenting your signatures of support at the January 2019 Texas Legislative Session. All comments are welcomed as well.
