Kyarra Bastian started this petition to Government and

Mia Simmons, 20, was attacked from behind by Latanya Watson. In the viral surveillance video of the attack towards Ms. Simmons it was clear that she was acting in self defense. After attempts of trying to walk away, Ms. Watson kept on coming after Ms. Simmons. Shortly after leaving the turnstiles in a NYC train station Latanya pepper sprayed and stabbed Mia before she could even react. It was clear that Watson was the initial aggressor. Mia was ambushed from behind and took several hits before swinging a knife that initially belonged to Latanya. The brawl ended with 30-year-old Latanya Watson dead.

Mia Simmons is now facing manslaughter and weapon possession charges for self defense. New York has a self defense law based on the castle doctrine but it is considered much weaker than similar castle doctrine laws enacted in other states.  In NYS, unlike Florida, a citizen has the duty to retreat from attackers if they feel they can safely to so.  Within their home, the castle doctrine authorizes deadly force as long as the resident is not the instigator of the confrontation.

We need to stand up for Mia Simmons, for she is being wrongfully convicted for self defense. Please share this petition and help me bring Mia home. Let's prevent this from happening to anymore of our youth.
