The Issue
Postal workers connect our country and our people. We love to help our customers and deliver a great service.
For over 500 years Royal Mail have delivered letters and parcels in the U.K. we are the only company who has to deliver letters 6 days a week 52 weeks of the year. This is called the USO (universal service obligation)
Two weeks ago Royal Mail announced that they were suspending the delivery of letters on Saturdays. This was done without consultation with the CWU (postal union).
After an uproar they have now agreed to meet with CWU and said that the suspension will only last 6 weeks.
We call upon the government and Ofcom to commit to The USO and enshrine it in law. Royal Mail is not just a private company but a precious national service to the U.K. If the USO is abandoned this could lead to up to 20,000 job losses.
