Statement of purpose- We demand that the Telangana government form and implement strict building laws in Hyderabad. It should focus on reducing the urbanization levels with regulations and restrictions for the development of areas and this will have a long-term sustainable impact on the city.  This will also help to reduce the overall contributions to climate change in Hyderabad.

Climate change has become a global issue as changes in weather patterns can be seen all over the globe. It has significantly impacted the environment as well as the entire humankind. Initially, climate change would occur only due to natural causes such as the Milankovitch cycle. However, with a rapid increase in population, urbanization and pollution levels have shot up, which has further resulted in increased climate change. Human activities are now the major contributors towards climate change. In Hyderabad, more and more buildings are coming up, without regulations from the government and industries are growing as well, contributing to the air pollution.

In recent years, Hyderabad has faced severe consequences of climate change. The changes in weather patterns have been drastic. According to a newspaper, the city received 100mm of heavy rainfall in just a few hours in October, 2021. The heavy rainfall wreaked havoc in the city with floods disrupting people’s lives. Since lakes and open spaces are disappearing, rainfall is causing more flooding. According to a meteorologist, the extreme weather conditions will become more intense in the future due to global warming. The weather patterns in the city have become extremely unpredictable with no uniformity.

Forming and enforcing regulations and restrictions for buildings may be an effective method to reduce contributions to climate change and will specifically target the rapid urbanization levels in the city. The Telangana government should strictly enforce the laws in order to achieve a more sustainable future. In addition to this, each and every citizen should be mindful of their carbon footprint as well as the laws related to buildings and strictly abide by them. While, this method will help in reducing the contributions, it is important to remember that this not the only area we have to be careful of and try our best to reduce other contributions as well. If all the stakeholders in the city of Hyderabad are able to effectively implement this method, then there will be a short-term benefit to the weather patterns and a long-term reduction in the overall global climate change.
