We need our St. Maarten Government to take action now! The USM matters.
The University of St. Martin (USM) has opened its doors two decades ago and exists longer than the country St. Maarten. Ever since 10-10-10 (St. Maarten's Constitutional Day) the Government of St. Maarten has:
1) Not formally recognized the USM in the form of a tertiary education law (pending since 10-10-10)
2) Has been paying the USM a subsidy that does not cover its costs. The subsidy takes care of 20% (less than 1% of their total annual budget), but all normal universities need 80% of its operational costs to be subsidized. This subsidy needs to be increased.
The USM's main objective is "The key to a brighter future" by offering the inhabitants of St. Maarten the opportunity to study in their own country. One of the basic human rights.
The USM has been working diligently over the past few years to get international accreditations, which it has succeeded in obtaining.
The business community of St. Maarten has always funded the USM throughout the years, which covered the deficit in income that the Government is not subsidizing. The USM is not willing to increase its tuition fees, as that will mean many of its students cannot afford it because they might not have the opportunity to travel abroad for their studies.
As we all know, Irma came and devastated St. Maarten. As a result, USM's loyal (and silent) donors cannot take up Government's responsibility anymore, because they have to save their own businesses and employees.
The USM needs to be saved now!! Without increased Government support, USM will have to close its doors and there will be no local opportunity to graduate with an Associates, Bachelor, or Master degree.
What is a country without a university? The youth are our future, and without (educated) youth, there is no future.
Can you rebuild your country better when you close down your university?
