Postpone GCE advanced level examinations by a more suitable time
The Issue
Advanced level examination for the year 2020 was supposed to be held in August. The advanced level examination is the exam that let government universities in Sri Lanka to choose students that are among the best to study for higher education.
The advanced level syllabus is made by a panel of professors for teachers to teach the students of year 13 and 12 throughout two years which is a significant time compared to the 13 years that students stay in school.
From those two years, we advanced level students who were about to take the exam this year lost more than four months and still, it doesn't look like we can start our education in the usual manner for a long time.
During these four months, which include bomb blasting lockdowns in April 2019, students were not able to continue their studying as they did in their typical day to day life. Students had to spend these months stuck at home without being able to go out, talk with friends or anything enjoyable as the exam was coming up close. This could make students stressed out or take their mentalities into a slight depressive state. Therefore it is not fair to expect us to study thoroughly with these conditions.
Schools start in July and Tution classes begin in the end of June. Tuition field is commercialized and there’s a huge competition between teachers. Therefore they will put extra classes everyday to cover the syllabus. Otherwise it will be a black mark to their career. When schools start we students have to stay in school till 3.30 pm and then rush to classes. When then we will have to go home late in the night probably after 9.00pm. Most of us have to wake up before 5.30 am to go to school. There will be no time for us to study if the examination is in September.
Considering all these facts and feedbacks, we humbly request from the entity in charge to postpone the examination by a more suitable time for making it fair and unbiased for all students who will sit for A/Ls this year.
