Ontario needs to pass legislation to help First Responders with PTSD access WSIB benefits

The Issue

In July of 2014 I lost my husband, a twenty-five year veteran of the Toronto Police Service, to suicide after a long struggle with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Early intervention and access to benefits such as psychological counselling, peer support and workplace accommodations might have saved his life and yet, my family was never able to get the support we needed. For an acknowledged work-related psychological illness, WSIB support should have been automatic. Instead, those suffering from the often debilitating affects of PTSD, which include severe depression, anxiety, panic attacks, paranoia and hypervigilance, are forced to prove their illness is real while employers can challenge them every step of the way. This needs to change. Ontario should follow the examples set by Alberta and Manitoba (and soon, New Brunswick) and pass legislation to treat work-related PTSD as an occupational injury automatically eligible for worker’s compensation benefits. The Ontario legislature is scheduled to debate the issue on February 16. Let's tell them how important this issue is and to stop stalling. Had WSIB benefits been more easily available to my husband, there is no doubt in my mind that he would still be with us today.
