Government of Nova Scotia: STOP building new residential institutions for autistic kids!

The Government of Nova Scotia is breaking its promise to disabled children and their families.  In 2013, the government vowed to close residential institutions for autistic and intellectually disabled children by 2023, replacing them with appropriate services so that children could continue to live with their families and attend school in their communities.

Yet this week, construction began for a residential institution in Cape Breton which would house autistic children as young as 2 years of age, away from their families 24 hours a day.  The Province allocated $1.2 million towards this segregated institution for autistic children.

If the Government is committed to closing all residential institutions by 2023, why is it building new ones?

We demand that the Government of Nova Scotia cancel this project NOW and reallocate the $1.2 million price tag towards meaningful supports for autistic children in their communities, with their families.  Segregating children because of their disabilities is a violation of their human rights.  Our government needs to live up to its promises and close all residential institutions, now.
