The pandemic has shone a light on a serious problem in our health care system: the care of vulnerable residents in long term care in Manitoba. What is evident is that the province was not prepared for the pandemic and did not adequately respond or support long term care facilities leading to much sickness and deaths. In particular, the province needs to examine the role of for profit (private) operators of long term care facilities and whether they should be allowed to continue to operate in Manitoba. There were concerns about long term care long before Covid came along but it has now reached a level where it is both a threat to lives and taking lives. The time for an inquest is now, not after the pandemic is over. Demand an independent inquest into long term care operations in Manitoba for the thousands of Manitobans who are living in care.
