We are Lebanese parents. Our children officially reintegrated school beginning of November, having been deprived from it since March 2020 because of the Covid19 pandemic. With the recent surge in cases that the country is witnessing, and seeing how the Government is not yet able to flatten the curve, we see a possibility that a decision will be made to close schools again, and we want to challenge that. 

Three months into their reopening, schools in the US and Europe have been officially declared as not being super spreaders. In addition, Lebanese families with children are among the most careful in their prevention against Covid, since often they are in close contact with grandparents of the family. Thus, assuming that schools in Lebanon pose a danger to public health is overstretched. 

Many countries that have locked down this month have done so while keeping schools open, while our country is open and is closing down schools as a first step. Closing schools should be the last step in the lockdown measures taken by a government.

We find the eventuality of closing schools this coming week unproductive and we demand the Ministry of Education to keep all schools open provided they are able to implement globally-implemented prevention and sanitisation measures: masks, social distancing, sanitisation of classrooms, and of course reporting and processes if and when community members are tested positive for Covid.

Our children's education is a priority. Schools are pillar enterprises of the Lebanese economy. The schooling system enables parents to effectively attend their work and provide for their family. These elements are central to survive the current crisis our country is going through. We demand the Ministry of Education to consider education as an essential aspect of life and refuse their closing as a first response to flatten the curve.

Instead of closing them, we demand that the Ministry of Education enable them to prevent the spread of the virus by keeping them open and empower them to be agents of prevention. 

نحن مجموعة من أولياء الأمور اللبنانيين. التحق اولادنا رسمياً بالمدارس مع بداية شهر تشرين الثاني بعد فترة حرمان دراسية بدأت في شهر آذار ٢٠٢٠ على أثر انتشار جائحة كورونا. مع ارتفاع اعداد الاصابات الذي تشهده البلاد وأمام عجز الحكومة من السيطرة على الوضع نحن أمام مشهد إقفال مدرسيّ مجدداً. وها نحن نعلن رفضنا لهكذا تدبير.
بعد فترة ثلاثة أشهر على استئناف العام الدراسي في عدة دول اميركية وأوروبية، اصبح واضحا ان نسبة انتشار العدوى داخل المدارس متدنية. ذلك إضافةً إلى الحرص الوقائيّ عند معظم الأسر اللبنانية بحكم الاختلاط الدائم مع الجدّ والجدّة وكبار السنّ في العائلة. لذلك نرى أن التسرّع في اعتبار المدارس مصدر خطير ومؤكّد للعدوى هو أمرٌ مبالغٌ فيه.
إن العديد من الدول فرضت مع بداية هذا الشهر الاقفال العام مع الابقاء على سير العمل في المدارس، وها نحن في لبنان أمام مشهد معاكس يتمثل باقفال المدارس وابقاء كل ما تبقى مفتوحا بشكل اعتياديّ. إننا نرى أن إقفال المدارس يجب أن يكون أحد آخر الإجراءات الوقائيّة التي من الممكن أن تلجأ لها الحكومة.
ففرضيّة اقفال المدارس برأينا هي خطوة غير مجدية ونطالب وزارة التربية والتعليم العالي أن تُبقي المدارس مفتوحة مع اشتراط اعتمادها المعايير الموصى بها عالمياً للوقاية والتعقيم: ارتداء الاقنعة، الحفاظ على مسافة آمنة، تعقيم الصفوف والتبليغ عن الحالات الايجابية إذا ما وُجدت.
حقّ أولادنا في التعلّم أولويّة. إن القطاع المدرسيّ في لبنان هو ركيزة أساسيّة لحسن سير العجلة الاقتصاديّة. فهو يسمح لأولياء الأمور بالانصراف إلى أشغالهم لتأمين لقمة العيش لعائلاتهم. ولا يُخفى عن أحد مدى أهميّة ذلك في ظلّ الأزمة المعيشيّة والاقتصاديّة الصعبة التي تمرّ بها البلاد. إننا نطالب وزارة التربية والتعليم العالي باعتبار التعليم حاجة ملحّة وأساسيّة في حياة اولادنا وعدم اللجوء إلى إقفال المدارس كمحاولةً للسيطرة على انتشار الكورونا.
ونقترح على الوزارة المعنيّة الاستفادة من المدارس لنشر الوعي للحدّ من انتشار الفيروس بدلاً من اللجوء إلى اقفالها.
