It is immensely unjustified to celebrate an official 'National' holiday on October 2 and on top of that call it 'Gandhi Jayanti'. There are several reasons why that is so.

First of all, october 2 is not only the birthday of mohandas gandhi but also of one of our greatest former Prime Ministers, Lal Bahadur Shastri. So if we do decide to observe october 2 as a national holiday it should be called as 'Gandhi-Shastri Jayanti' to also commemorate and pay our respects to Lal Bahadur Shastri which have been long due because of the 'Gandhi Jayanti'.

That is the least change we should try to make but there are much better options too like completely remove the holiday on october 2. Dedicating an official holiday to one single freedom fighter is nothing but at the least a disrespect to other freedom fighters like Sardar Patel, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, and countless more names that we might have not even heard. So why do we not dedicate an official holiday on their birthdays?

It might not be a good idea to declare all those dates a holiday so just getting rid of holiday on october 2 is a good idea. OR, the holiday could be reassigned to another random date and can be named as "Freedom Fighters' Day" or "Memorial Day" or synonymous to that. This way we can commemorate all our heroes who have sacrificed everything for our country including their lives.

They say that gandhi's India will prevail. But they don't know that it is also equally Bose's India, Patel's India, Bhagat Singh's India and it is about that time, that we as dedicated citizens of India do what should've been done long before.

So I request you to sign this petition and share it as much as possible so that we can make our voices heard to the Government Of India to take suitbale actions for this to happen. Thank you very much.
