Opt-Out system of organ donation in India

The Issue

To save the life of even one person is the most beautiful deed one can perform.Imagine providing a person the brightness of his/her life by donating your eye or providing someone a whole new life by donating your heart to a needful after you leave the world!Yes,you can prove to be someone's savior even after you leave for your heavenly abode;and all you have to do is donate your organs after your death. One donor can save upto 8 lives and heal upto 80 through tissue donation.Worldwide, there are two systems for organ donation:

  1. The OPT-IN system: According to this system,if a person consents, then only will his/her organs be donated after his/her death. If the consent is not provided,it will be assumed that the person did not want to donate his/her organs.India currently follows this system and thus,if prior to death,a person fills the form that can be downloaded from National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) website or accessed from the medical facility that is approached for organ removal, then only will his/her organs be donated, and not otherwise.
  2. The OPT-OUT system: According to this system,it is presumed that after death, the organs of a person which are alright can be donated unless the person has stated otherwise or his/her family members object.

Globally, there has been a trend in countries to shift from Opt-in system to Opt-out system. In Belgium, this change doubled the rate of organ donation.

In other opt-out countries such as,spain and france, the number of deceased donors per million of population is at 46 and 30 respectively. In India, the same is at 0.5.

Every year in India around 5,00,000 people lose their lives due to lack of availability of organ donors for organ transplant.

An increase in organ donation will hopefully be caused by opt-out system which will not just provide organs for those who need but will also curb the black market of organs.

Lets be together to raise our voices for a small policy change to save millions of life.
