Make mental health sessions mandatory in Schools
The Issue
India is the most depressed country in the world today and what are we doing about it ? Nothing. Mental health doesn't seem important until it hits you. Aren't I right ? I know I am. What I'm about to tell you might be hard to digest but is true. If you finish reading this then it means that you do care and that's the point of this petition, to care and to act.
Many people have struggles from their childhood and they don't ask for help or are ignored when asking for help. At least what the schools can do is help them during this phase. Teen depression, anxiety, bipolar, eating disorder and suicidal thoughts are some of the most common mental health issues in today's world. Due to these eating you from the inside, you tend to spiral and end up doing things that hurt you as well as others. Then follows guilt and regret. Plus the education system adds so much pressure on students to score well which further worsens the situation. For some reason people pretend everything is okay and shower you with toxic positivity.
Let me tell you a personal story. I am a high school student who is the leader for the mental health group for SEWA. Apparently the presentation stating the mental health problems was " controversial " because it describes the issues and other students can get effected. How does talking about mental health issues cause mental health issues? Because of this stupid mentality I hope that the Indian government first educates the teachers on mental health issues so they can educate the students.
Let me get to the hard part. Many students die by suicide because they feel so little in the big world of compition. Imagine what their friends, parents and relatives are going through. They'd be thinking that if they had seen the signs they could have stopped it. The guilt eats them up. The society thinks that people with mental health problems are weak and will crumble but these people are the strongest people alive. Who gives a damn about what the society thinks? It's your life so you make the decision.
You know why these unfortunate events take place? Because there is a stigma attached to mental health. Why is the stigma there? Well because common people are illiterates when it comes to mental health. What can you do? Go educate yourself now ! What can the government do? They can start with having compulsory mental health sessions in all schools.
