Give the Ganga a new lease of life

Give the Ganga a new lease of life
The Issue
The Ganges (Ganga) is a river considered as sacred by the Hindus since times immemorial. The Ganga originates high in the Himalayan Mountains and empties out into the Bay of Bengal. The surrounding river basin has a population of more than four hundred million people. The River Ganga worshipped as the goddess is a lifeline for millions of Indians who live along its course and depend on it for their daily needs. The scientists have found that it is one of the most polluted water bodies with millions of litres of water, containing toxic elements and metals, that is regularly dumped in the Ganga. This constant pollution also depletes the level of dissolved oxygen in its water, particularly near the river bed, triggering a condition known as hypoxia, in which marine life cannot survive.
Saving the Ganga is a mammoth task and cannot be just left to the Government to address. We all as citizens and as conservationists need to help. Please sign this petition and help the Ganga gain a new lease of life.
