My family and I are absolutely heartbroken to be finding out the scale of justice for our sister, daughter, and a massive part of our family who was failed greatly by multiple agencies within Oxfordshire, and in Wales.
The years leading up to May 2011, India and her siblings were subject to Neglect, Physical, Sexual and Emotional abuse at the hands of their father and stepfather. In 2005 the children were taken into emergency police protection and placed into foster care for a month before being placed back into an unsafe home. Around 2007, it was decided that 4 of the kids would be in split arrangement custody in which they would spent one week with their mother and one week with their father and switch between the two. Which only allowed the abuse to get worse. Years of social, police ad RSPCA visits in which animals were removed failed to protect the children from these men. India and her siblings had to go through hours of photo-documentation, victim interviews with police and extensive health checks for signs of abuse. The men were taken into custody for questioning and charged, but the case never went to court. These men had their names put on the sex offender registry and the children were given victim protection orders against these men, but they walked free with every opportunity to carry on doing this to other children, which has led to other children receiving broken bones and other injuries.
In May of 2011 our beautiful India was placed in foster care, along with 3 other siblings, India suffered with her mental health soon after being placed in foster care, losing everyone apart from her mum and siblings, then being moved from home to home, and eventually being placed in children’s secure units because “she was too difficult to handle”. In November 2012, it was decided by multiple agencies that India would be move to Brambley House in Wrexham, 155 miles away from her family, with no contact to any of her siblings or any other family. Brambley house was a secure children’s unit, ran by Bryn Melyn Care LTD. She had a final visit with her mother in Oxford; this was the last time our family saw India or had contact with her. After being moved to Wrexham, India’s mental health deteriorated and herself harm became worse. Due to the deterioration of India’s mental health, India was deemed extremely vulnerable and was therefore required to be checked on every 15 minutes by the staff at Brambley House and two staff were paid to specifically care for India. The staff were given a list of things that they were meant to do inside of the room to ensure India’s’ safety. These things were never done. The night of February 26th 2013, just hours after an attempt to harm herself, India was locked into her room. Staff stood outside for 15 minutes and left. She became so desperate for relieve from the loneliness of her own mind, she tore up the bedsheets that were meant to have been replaced with tearproof ones, tied a ligature to wardrobe handles that were meant to have been removed and hung herself.
On the 27th of February 2013, our family was told the devastating news that India had taken her own life. For the past 7 and a half years, our family has been left wondering how our India was able to take her life whilst in a secure unit, why she was yet again failed, and what justice would be given to the professionals who failed India. After nearly 8 years of wondering, and lots of research, my family have now found the outcome of India’s death. We were not told by Oxfordshire Local Authorities, and the information posted in this news article, is the first time we are reading about what really happened in the last few days of our India’s life. Through these articles and investigations, we had found out that the specialist carers put in place to care for India were never trained and not qualified for this job. There was a lot of regulations that were not being met, had the staff been trained and these regulations been met, India would still be alive. It has recently been discovered that everyone that wasn’t immediately family had been told that India had died of cancer in an attempt to not tarnish the company’s reputation. We are distraught to be reading this on national news, rather than being kept updated from the local authorities. Our India is worth more than a £600,000 fine; Bryn Melyn Care LTD failed to train their staff, which then led to the failure to protect India. Hours after attempting to commit suicide, our “extremely vulnerable” India was locked in her room, and left until the next morning, where it was then discovered that she had hung herself.
THIS IS NOT JUSTICE.
We will not settle until the professionals, her father, her stepfather, and everybody involved who FAILED to protect India, who FAILED to support her, who FAILED to listen, is held accountable for their actions in the hopes that this will not be allowed to happen again.
That is when justice will be serviced for our beautiful, 13-year-old sister, who fell victim to the failure of Oxfordshire Children’s Services.
