This year, the maximum sentence for animal abuse has increased from 6 months to 5 years. This is a huge step in the right direction, however, this does not apply to all offences. For example, the neglect and abuse of a pet can result in fines, community service, and temporary bans in animal ownership. 

I don't believe that punishments like unpaid labour are proportionate to crimes such as murdering an innocent pet. So, this petition is aiming to ensure that every act of animal cruelty results in prison time. This includes crimes such as: using animals as test subjects for cosmetic products, neglecting and abusing pets, and murdering animals for reasons other than for food (for example, hunting, killing animals for amusement, etc). 

This will not guarantee safety for all animals, however, I am sure that people are far less likely to abuse and murder animals if they know that they will get a prison sentence as a result. I don't think punishments such as temporary bans in animal ownership are enough of a deterrent to prevent it.
