As our children prepare for Fathers Day in their schools and early years settings, hundreds of children are re-traumatised with painful memories of their childhood.

These traumatic memories could be abandonment, bereavement, child abuse, domestic violence, parental alienation or being placed in guardianship or Foster homes. As if it isn't bad enough for our children with all of the adverts on television and merchandise in shops, this subject is bought in to their schools, a place that is supposed to be safe for them.

The focus around Mothers and Fathers day can last weeks, bringing back traumatic memories and negative feelings about themselves. Some children don't have a family to celebrate and I can only imagine how alone they feel at these times of the year.

Families are so diverse now "mothers" and "fathers" day just doesn't seem to fit anymore. Many families are single parents, same sex couples, grandparents, Foster carers and guardians. I would like to replace Mothers day and Fathers day with a day to celebrate loved ones, family, friends, teachers and support workers.
