Neighbors, On June 27, 2017, Governor Rick Scott appointed Jimmy Patronis (R) as the new Florida's Chief Financial Officer to finish the term left by Jeff Atwater who resigned earlier this year. During all the years that Mr. Atwater spent in office, he refused to exercise his authority of ordering the State Fire Marshal to lower ground vibration limits. Almost two months later, Governor Scott announced that he will do everything he could to assure that Jimmy Patronis stays as Florida's CFO. As with his predecessor, we have been asking Mr. Patronis to use the power of his office to provide solutions for the blasting problem. Yes, he has been sending staff members to visit homes in the area, meet with elected officials and with the community, but nothing has changed. Mr. Patronis has failed to take definite measures to alleviate the constant blasts and White Rock Quarries keeps getting closer and closer to our homes. The other candidate is Jeremy Ring (D) who announced his intentions of running for the CFO's position in May 2017. We have asked Mr. Ring what would he do to provide solutions for the blasting but he has not responded. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: Chapter 552, Section 30 Florida Statue: "Construction materials mining activities.— (1) Notwithstanding the provisions of s. 552.25, the State Fire Marshal shall have the sole and exclusive authority to promulgate standards, limits, and regulations regarding the use of explosives in conjunction with construction materials mining activities. Such authority to regulate use shall include, directly or indirectly, the operation, handling, licensure, or permitting of explosives and setting standards or limits, including, but not limited to, ground vibration, frequency, intensity, blast pattern, air blast and time, date, occurrence, and notice restrictions." The statute is clear, but elected officials keep arguing that the language provided is confusing in order to avoid enforcing the law. HOW CAN WE FORCE THEM TO TAKE ACTION? Most candidates are launching their campaigns for the 2018 elections. In order to win a political race, a candidate needs two things: money and votes. This is where you can help. We have reached more than 2,200 potential voters with this petition. That is a huge milestone but is not enough to determine the results of an election. We need YOU to become a force multiplier by sharing our message. From now, until the end of this year, we need YOU to share this information with your neighbors, family members, coworkers, and any person who lives in Florida and will be voting in the next election. Once we have reached at least 10,000 signatures (potential voters), we will schedule meetings with the candidates. This is less than five new signatures per person. Once we meet with the candidates we will ask them ONE question: Are you going to exercise your sole and exclusive authority to lower ground vibration levels? We won't accept a politically correct answer. This is a YES or NO question. We will share their answers with you before the election. Electing Florida's next CFO will determine in big part the success of our fight for a life without rock mining blasting. We are not against the mining industry, but we know that there are other ways in which they can extract material without ruining our lives. Remember, the City of Miramar banned Blasting in 1999, we know that this is doable. In the upcoming elections of 2018, we cannot vote for a candidate just because he/she represents our political party. These man-made earthquakes do not discriminate between Republicans, Democrats, or Independents: we all are feeling the tremors, paying for the damages, and losing our quality of life. We need to unite in ONE political party, the party that is fed up with the blasting. We have to vote for the candidate who commits to lower blasting limits, period. Remember, we are in this mess because of political corruption generated by campaign contributions. White Rock Quarries has the money, BUT WE HAVE THE VOTES! This is YOUR time to make a difference.
