Demand Laws to Protect AZ Animals From Dangerously Hot Temperatures

The Issue

We have discovered there are no laws protecting animals from abuse by their owners in regard to walking their pet (specifically dogs) in very hot weather conditions or from leaving them in hot cars. This is abuse plain and simple:  if you cannot walk barefoot on hot pavement then neither can your dog. Other states have had these laws on their books for years and Arizona needs to get with the times and do the same. This is not a political issue, and has nothing to do with a conservative or liberal agenda. It is basic common sense law-making that puts into place protection for animals when their owners walk them in triple digit temps on hot surfaces with no booties, or leave them in a hot car with windows open to more hot and stifling air. The law also permits owners to leave pets outside in triple digit heat “as long as adequate shelter and water are available”, but this does not take into account that the sun (and therefore the shade) moves throughout the day, and water heats up very quickly to the point of being too hot to drink. There needs to be a complete overhaul of Arizona’s outdated and inadequate laws as it relates to pet ownership - particularly during the hot months of April-Oct.
