Severe environmental pollution by Carlsberg in Nepal.

Severe environmental pollution by Carlsberg in Nepal.
The Issue
The people of Pitaunji, Nawalparasi in Nepal raise their voices against the severe environmental pollution caused by Gorkha Brewery Limited of Carlsberg Group.
The issues stand as follows:
- The pollution of air by the brewery burners by using the cheaper saw dust instead of coal. This has resulted in soot like particles in the air that have caused various eye related problems in the village.
- The unchecked dumping of waste materials into the Narayani River has led to the destruction of water life.
- The long and unending line of delivery trucks parked along the only road in the village has blocked public transportations including school buses .
- The loitering of the truck drivers all night creates a feeling of insecurity. This has given rise to many situations like pollution of the river since there are no toilets provided for them, shanty eating places sprouting up where alcohol along with services of all kinds are being provided, thus hampering the village social environment.
- The litter left by the trucks, the broken bottles heaped in open ground endangering children playing around and the stench of rotting containers and sacks piled on a neighbouring wall.
The following issues are clear evidence that Carlsberg has clearly violated its own policy on environmental friendliness, disregarding and endangering a local community in a poor country like Nepal.
The demands by the local community with signatures, are as follows:
- Use of charcoal instead of saw dust to burn the waste, reducing the pollution of the air.
- To deal with the polluting of the river by the use of larger scale wastage water treatment plants.
- To find suitable parking areas outside the village premises for the delivery trucks, on order to contain the traffic and social pollution.
- Proper management and removal of the dumping of bottle glass and containers outside the village.
- Proper drainage along the village road to deal with brewery chemical waste.
