I woke up this morning to find over 1,300 people have signed the petition I started two days ago in support of Gorillaz cancelling their production of NFTs. I'm so incredibly proud and thankful to the community for coming together and taking a stand. Over 1,000 fans from all over the world see the hypocrisy and irony in Gorillaz, creators of the environmentalist album Plastic Beach, working with a company called "Superplastic" that aids in the production of incredibly harmful emissions to the Earth by creating non-fungible tokens. I believe this tweet by Mattthew Graphics puts it best: "gorillaz making a collab with a company called SUPERPLASTIC and NFTs after making an album called plastic beach is like if Aquaman teamed up with 'BIG COOL OIL INC.' to sell oil to fish". We're doing great so far everybody! My thanks extends to everyone who has signed, shared, and has added comments in support. Please continue to share and ask fans you know to sign! The main point in this petition is to show the team behind Gorillaz that the fans are largely against any production of NFTs in the band's image as this goes against everything the band has stood for in the past - the more support the better!
***IMPORTANT:
In my last update, I asked supporters to contact head of digital marketing of Gorillaz management Stars Redmond and Superplastic CEO Paul Budnitz by attaching our petition in an email to both parties urging them to stop production of any NFT made in Gorillaz's likeness. A really cool user on twitter, Rigo (@MoonRigo), took the time to create a pre-written message template that fans can send to Superplastic's founder and Gorillaz's digital management head in regards to stopping NFT production. You can find a link to the google doc in Rigo's tweet and also here. Please copy and paste the message in the document to Eleven Management (info@elevenmgmt.com) and Paul Budnitz (contact here)! Thanks Rigo!!
While over 1,000 supporters is amazing progress, we still have yet to see an official statement from Gorillaz. This petition won't close until a statement is released agreeing to stop production of NFTs and that the management team of Gorillaz and their label Warner Music Group will make marketing decisions in the future with the band's Earth conscious values in mind.
And my message to Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett still stands: Plastic Beach and the meaning made in your art and music means so much to fans all over the world. So many are disappointed by this announcement. I'm hoping this petition makes its way to you and shows you that Gorillaz fans want better for our planet just as much as you do!
Thank you for reading!
