The League of Macedonian-Americans (LOMA), along with ethnic Macedonians throughout the world, demands that Google Maps stop referring to Macedonia as "Macedonia (FYROM)". The name "FYROM" is both inaccurate and insulting.
Google has no legitimate reason to place the term "FYROM" next to or below Macedonia's name on Google Maps. "FYROM" is not a temporary name for Macedonia. "FYROM" is not an internationally accepted name for Macedonia. Rather, Macedonia is recognized as the Republic of Macedonia by almost three-fourths of the world's countries. Many other countries have no known or official stance on Macedonia's name.
Perhaps Google refers to Macedonia as "FYROM" because this is what Greece and/or Greeks have requested. However, this claim has no legal basis. UN Security Council Resolution 817 (1993) states that Macedonia should be "provisionally referred to for all purposes within the United Nations as 'the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.'" Some key points of consideration with respect to this resolution:
- The acronym "FYROM" does not appear in the resolution;
- "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" is not a name but a reference; and
- The reference "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" is only to be used for purposes within the United Nations.
In addition, the term "FYROM" is insulting to ethnic Macedonians because Macedonia's southern neighbor uses that term to deny the ethnic identity of the Macedonians. We Macedonians are nothing but Macedonians. But the Greeks do not believe we Macedonians have the right to identify ourselves; the Greek government does not believe Macedonia has the right to self-determine its name and identity. Further, even though several international human rights groups have found that a significant ethnic Macedonian minority resides in Greece, those Macedonians do not have the right to identify as ethnic Macedonians. Instead, Greece refers to Macedonians as "FYROMIANS", and usage of the term "FYROM" by others enables Greece's discriminatory tendencies.
Thus, by continuing to refer to Macedonia as "FYROM", Google inadvertently promotes Greece's discrimination against ethnic Macedonians and intentionally treats Macedonians differently than all other peoples and nations by only referring to Macedonia by a name it has not chosen for itself.
Therefore, we call on Google to end its insulting, inappropriate and incorrect assault on the Macedonian country, people and identity. The Republic of Macedonia only has one name -- Macedonia!
