Google: Keep Inbox, shut down old Gmail instead!

Google: Keep Inbox, shut down old Gmail instead!

The Issue

Ever since Inbox, the official alternative client for Gmail, was released about four years ago, I have been using it. It was, and still is, one of, if not the best E-Mail client to ever exist. Its revolutionary design increased my productivity, and that of many others, in a way that nobody could have dreamed of before it launched. Now Google wants to shut it down, because someone decided, that all the good features of Inbox have already been integrated into the classic Gmail client.

They are not! Gmail still lacks a lot of the core functionality that made Inbox so easy to use. Snoozing mail, pinning it and marking it as done, when it wasn't important anymore were total game-changers. And so was the bundle-system that Inbox introduced to us, which is far superior to the traditional Gmail's tab-based label system.

I have never before been so aware of what was going on in my E-Mails, so free of unnecessary information, that didn't quite qualify as spam, but was simply less important at the time. None of these features have yet made it into the old Gmail client, at least not in the way they were implemented in Inbox. If you haven't tried out Inbox yourself, I strongly recommend you give it a shot, it might take a couple minutes (and yes, I do mean just a couple minutes) to get used to, but you too will immediately recognise it's potential to set a new standard for how we deal with E-Mails.

I understand Google's decisions, in the way that they want to streamline their E-Mail experience, both to cut down on development and upkeep costs and to avoid confusion among the users. But shutting down Inbox is a step in the wrong direction, a step backwards towards a more traditional, but also far less productive E-Mail client. Nobody ever asked for this, every single Inbox user I have ever spoken to said the same thing to me: "I could never switch back to regular Gmail!" And everyone I have showed Inbox to, even elderly folk, children and technically inept people all understood how Inbox works and loved the experience within minutes of first learning about it. So why destroy an awesome product in favour of an old one? Why try to add features from Inbox to Gmail, if Inbox already surpasses it in terms of features and usability? It simply doesn't make sense.

If you too are an avid Inbox user, and/or are as fed up with Google's constant creation and destruction of redundant services in favour of worse versions of themselves, please sign this petition, before it's too late!

I do NOT want to live in a world without Inbox!
