The Issue

PERTINENT ISSUES.

According to FAO in Kenya, agriculture is key to Kenya's economy, contributing 26 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and another 27 per cent of GDP indirectly through linkages with other sectors. The sector employs more than 40 per cent of the total population and more than 70 per cent of Kenya's rural people. (http://www.fao.org/kenya/fao-in-kenya/kenya-at-a-glance/en/

QUESTION: Why are smallholder households in Kenya among the poorest in our country yet they produce over 70% of our daily food?

Farmers, we need to come together to speak about our challenges and what we believe to be our path to solving these issues.

Farmers need;

1) Laws that will protect them and the important work they do.

2) Appropriate information to better utilise the dwindling resource - Land. To produce better crops for food and the market, farmers need demonstration sites, reports on local weather trends, research on soil, water, air, Pests and diseases.

3) Support to access quality farm implements through access to finance and subsidies.
