Retract the Goa Coal Infrastructure Development Plan in the Protected Areas

The Issue

Statement of Solidarity

To the people of the Nation,

The ever-fascinating biodiversity of Goa, the smallest state of India, is under grave danger. The state which is home to several endemic species and semi-evergreen lush forests is under danger from infrastructure projects being allowed in protected areas of Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and National Park in Mollem, Goa. It is crucial we raise our voices towards this issue which has the potential to disrupt the essential and beautiful biodiversity of Goa.
It is time we, in unison, raise our voices against the environmental atrocities being committed by the State department of Goa under the guise of economic expansion. The fact that they think they can fell 59,024 trees, home to countless species of flora and fauna, and get away with it, makes it pertinent that we raise our voices now before it is too late.

The Problem-

The stretch of land that the Government claims will double the revenue of the economy will come at the cost of destroying over 170 hectares of land which is home to more than 70 types of mammal, 235 bird species, 219 butterfly species, 45 reptile species, 44 fish species and 27 amphibian species. If you think that such rich natural resources can be brushed aside in name of proposed economic growth, then you sir, need to check your privilege.
What is happening in Goa, not to mention amid a global pandemic, raises a serious concern about the callous way the government has brushed aside environmental impact to make room for heaps of coal to be dumped in the Mollem National Park. We, the board of Greener Things, raise our voices in solidarity to the carnage that threatens the livelihood of tens of thousands of local Goans. The way the government has planned this act, done in throes of a pandemic to avoid a public impact assessment hearing and laying out the first dig after sunset when nothing could be done, speaks volumes about their intention. If we do not say something now, it will be too late once the trees are felled.
This economic project not only has an environmental, sociological and livelihood impact upon Goa as a whole, but also endangers the mortality of the people that will be affected by the pollution of the lake water. Though thousands of petitions have been signed online, we would like to stress the need for ongoing support to the cause of Goa at this critical juncture.

Support-
We stand with the thousands of Goans that protest this cause today and everyday until our collective voice reach the people who can put a stop to this destruction. We are in full support of the people of Goa using their voice to attain social, economic and environmental justice.

Solution-

We demand the retraction of the Coal Infrastructure Projects, especially the part of it which runs through the protected areas of Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and National Park in Mollem.

Consistent with our mission, we remain open to any and all opinions that the readers have and will help facilitate any social media or in person support that is possible by us. We stand in unity and will not rest until this cause has burnt out bathing us in fumes of power and justice for the ecological diversity of Goa.
