Help Stop the felling of a 200 year old tree
The Issue
Please help us and sign this petition to help the people of Cheltenham keep a local treasure.
A dozen or so home owners in Albemarle Gate in Cheltenham, overlooking the Grade 2 English Heritage historic Pittville Park, want Gloucestershire County Council to release the contents of a report that is calling for a 200-year-old Cedar of Lebanon in the midst of their properties to be felled. Over 1500 supporters have joined them at Cedar of Cheltenham https://www.facebook.com/groups/915555295622342
Council officials and contractors refuse to believe that subsidence to two properties is caused by the poor demolition of a previous large house, the demolished remains of which sit beneath their foundations. When the original property was demolished bricks, doors and other materials were dropped into the basement and clearly not compacted well enough, resulting in the ground settling, causing damage to the new properties above.
Now, 50 years later, the County Council is intent on felling the iconic and very healthy and majestic Cedar of Lebanon, loved by all, rather than enter into a dialogue with residents, acting instead through a property insurance company and an un-named tree consultant. We need to show the faceless council that there is no sense in destroying the cedar and that they should release their report for examination by our advisers.
