The Prem Rugby 2026-27 fixtures were announced today (July 28) and for a second season running, one of Gloucester Rugby's "home" games has been earmarked to be played at Villa Park in Birmingham.

The first ill-advised attempt last season did not appear to be a huge success on any level - the stadium was almost 20,000 below capacity and Gloucester were roundly thrashed 36-17 by Leicester (scoring zero bonus points), having relinquished home advantage at Kingsholm.

There are plenty of reasons that this fixture should not be played in Birmingham, approximately 60 miles from Gloucester's actual home stadium:

1. It's hugely disrespectful for loyal fans, particularly season ticket holders who lose one game that they have paid to attend - unless they’re prepared to travel almost 60 miles. The value for money has already significantly decreased since the size of the league shrunk after three clubs folded.
2. The cost of living crisis continues and these travel expenses are costs that not all fans are able to absorb, whether driving or travelling via public transport. And even if they are able, it's hugely inconvenient.
3. The club is giving away a competitive advantage for one of only nine home league games in a season, passing up the chance to play in front of the fiercest crowd in English top-flight rugby, as well as the other benefits that come with actual home advantage for the players.
4. Local businesses in Gloucester, which benefit hugely from the games and home fans, also lose a game per season - this can only be detrimental to the local economy.
5. Perhaps most mind-blowingly, Villa Park is actually about 15 miles closer to Leicester, the opponents for the first two “home” games in Birmingham so far. So this "home" game for Gloucester is actually closer to a home game for the away team - meaning that Gloucester effectively play Leicester away twice in a season. That is not a level playing field and somewhat affects the sporting integrity of the league.

In fact, about the only good reason to hold this "home" game so far from home is if it makes it easier for Ed Slater, after whom the twice-a-season Slater Cup is named, to travel to the match. A great player and man who doesn't deserve to be associated with this circus.

Following the first game at Villa Park in the 2025-26 season, many supporters reported transport difficulties and there was widespread dissatisfaction both before and after the match.
