Save Marine Life and It's Ecosystem

The Issue

Marine wildlife, sea life or ocean life, is the living organisms that occupy the sea. All the plants, animals, and microorganisms is the Marine Wildlife. Ecosytem by definition is a community of living and nonliving organisms, interacting as a system. They are all linked together by a cycle, nutrient cyle, and energy flow. These two are one of the main components of the earth. They are the habitat of all the species of any living and nonliving organisms. Where we get all the main resources necessary for life. Pollution, pollution is the main cause why our marine life and ecosystem is at risk right now. Air pollution, water pollution, land pollution, etc. are what they're experiencing because of our inhumane and selfish actions. We are the ones that caused this crisis our marine life and ecosystem are facing right now. But it's still not too late. We can still solve this crisis. If we're the ones that caused it, we should also be the one solving this crisis.

A study shows that there are at least 226,408 marine species but there are most likely at least 750,000 marine species (50% of 1.5 million species) and possibly as many as 25 million marine species (50% of 50 million species). When we recall during the last years between 1970-2012, A new report from the World Wildlife Fund indicates a nearly 50% decline in marine life populations. The oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface and contain 97% of the Earth’s water. Less than 1% is fresh water, and 2-3% is contained in glaciers and ice caps. The ocean constitutes over 90% of the habitable space on the planet. Today 60% of the world’s major marine ecosystems that underpin livelihoods have been degraded or are being used unsustainably. A study recently published in the Poceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) found that atleast 88% of the earth’s ocean surface is polluted with plastic debris. All the world's oceans are at risk, but the Pacific Ocean is of particular concern. There are fewer regulations in Asia, and they are fishing more waters. The common practice of "shark-finning" has taken a toll on the shark population. This involves only removing the fins from the shark, and throwing the body back. Shark-fin soup is considered a delicacy in Asia. However, if this continues, an estimated 25% of shark species could become extinct in the next 10 years. Many of the species that are dying are vital food sources around the world, especially for poorer countries who rely primarily on the fish population for food. Also, the ecology of the oceans is greatly impacted. The study uses a Living Planet Index based on trends in 5,829 populations of 1,234 mammal, bird, reptile and fish species in the ocean. According to the report, populations of locally and commercially fished species have also fallen by half, and some even more. The tuna and mackerel populations have seen a nearly 75% decline and Bluefin tuna in the Pacific are on the brink of extinction. This is largely due to the global problem of overfishing, the authors said. By the year 2100, without significant changes, more than half of the world’s marine species may stand on the brink of extinction.

The Philosophical view that we can associate with our petition is Environmental Justice and this pertains to the adequate distribution of environmental benefits and also the weight of facing environmental challenges. As advocates of environmental justice, we would like to encourage and educate the youth and the government to take responsibility in giving care for our environment as well as the entire planet. Through our petition, we are hoping that as early as now, we can take action big or small, in preserving our marine life and ecosystem.

Marine life is a significant and abundant factor that balances the Earth’s overall ecosystem and way of life. The ocean and its inhabitants are one of the primary sources that support life and make our planet habitable to its occupants. One consequential contribution of marine life is the regulation and production of oxygen. Many have thought of the longest time that the rainforests are the main suppliers of this planet’s oxygen. But that is proven to be wrong because the oceans are responsible for at least 70% of the oxygen supply of our planet while the rainforests are only responsible for 20% of it. The destruction of the ocean can lead to the lack of supply of oxygen in our planet, with this in mind, it can lead to the death of multiple species and plants which are both beneficial not only for the balance of our ecosystem but also to medicines that are needed by our society. Next, the destruction of Marine life can lead to the imbalance of our ecosystem, wherein famine might exists, as well as mass extinction of species that mutually depend on marine life. Global economy is also affected, with livelihood security and imports-exports of goods will be unstable because of the lack of raw materials. But most importantly and overall, this will permanently damage and cause irreversible consequences to our planet, making it more and more inhabitable with the increasing amount of damage we cause to it.

We propose a solution by instilling policies such as environmental conservation policies, controlled fishing bills and new routes for ships to pass through with seas deep enough for ships to pass without damaging the coral reefs. But most importantly, saving the marine life isn’t and can’t be handled by the government alone. It is a mass effort wherein men, women alike are needed to help to make a change. This starts with ourselves and how willing we are to take action and responsibility for our home planet.

We all know that when it comes to marine life, our existence depends upon their existence. Marine wildlife is definitely in danger. They are asking for our assistance and help! Without them our life is truly nothing. We should respect them in return for their respect for us, human beings. This petition is not only for them to not be extinct but also for them to live their life and continue their reproduction. Our world is getting bigger  yet the first creatures whom help us improve are dying. We should realise that we are the one who kills them. We are destroying their homes just to get what we want, what we need to survive. Throwing trashes in their homes just to free our hands from it . Throwing bombs just to get a lot of fishes and other marine species in exchange for money. Always remember that we are the one who can think, we have our mind and they don’t. Think a million times before disturbing their peaceful life before our lives are being disturbed to. As the research have demonstrated, massive parts of our world are affected due to ignorance of some human beings. Marine wildlife needs justice. As early as now, take action for the future. Try to imagine a world without them. Some cannot feel the thought about it , some can probably say that nothing will change. Well in fact, it can cause our life to end. Always have the thought that the greatest danger to our planet is the belief that someone else is totally and definitely willing to save it.
