Give me a lift!!!
Give me a lift!!!
The issue
I'm a 40 year old male, I live on the Central Coast and commute to work in Chatswood. I suffer from mild cerebral palsy which causes me to limp, however due to an unrelated injury on my leg about 3 years ago, I now use a walking frame as extra support because sometimes my leg can be extremely painful.
Given my injury, I rely on elevators (lifts) where I can instead of steps. Over a period of the last few months, one of the lifts at Chatswood Interchange, has been regularly out of service. This requires me to use the steps or the escalator which I can do if ABSOLUTELY necessary however it also means that I have to ask a stranger passing by, if they'll kindly help me with my walking frame, this is somewhat embarrassing because I'm usually very independent.
Recently, the lift I'm referring to has been out of order for about 2 weeks but last Friday, 13th March both the lift AND escalator weren't working. I then had to walk back to the train station, catch a train to St Leonards (10mins away) and get a cab to work. Due to start work at Midday, I was about an hour and a half late. I've since been advised of an alternate route to get to where I need to be- because the lift AND escalator are STILL out of order, however I'm not familiar going this way and it takes longer, putting more pressure on my leg.
Getting home isn't much easier, although I don't have time restraints. I finish work at 8pm and wait 25mins for a bus to St Leonards (which is going in the other direction) before catching a train to Hornsby and then on to the Central Coast.
Chatswood Interchange is a MAJOR commercial/retail area. Many people such as myself work in Chatswood and I feel sorry for anyone else disabled or elderly, who rely on this lift just to simply go about their day to day lives.
I've already e-mailed the local MP (Gladys Berejiklian) as well as the local council, but am yet to receive a response.
